[Columbus, Ohio] — The Ohio School-Based Health Alliance (“Ohio Alliance”) releases the SBHC 101 Toolkit on Thursday, December 19, a comprehensive resource designed to support school districts, healthcare providers, and community partners in exploring and setting up school-based health centers (SBHCs). SBHCs are an evidence-driven model that require school district and healthcare provider partnership to bring access to, at minimum, comprehensive primary care services to students at school.
The SBHC 101 Toolkit is divided into three modules, offering valuable information, resources, and tools to guide partners in: (1) Understanding the SBHC model, including key components and its impacts; (2) Conducting a comprehensive planning process for an SBHC; and (3) Establishing a sustainable SBHC model that meets identified community needs.
The Toolkit is the product of extensive collaboration, drawing insights from listening sessions with schools, healthcare providers, state agency staff, and community partners from across Ohio. Developed by the Ohio School-Based Health Alliance, the Toolkit was made possible with funding from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and informed by the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
The Toolkit reflects a shared commitment by Governor Mike DeWine, state leaders, and the Ohio Alliance to advancing the well-being of Ohio’s students and communities. “OhioMHAS is proud to support the creation of this toolkit as part of our ongoing commitment to making care more accessible for all Ohioans,” said OhioMHAS Director LeeAnne Cornyn. “School-based health centers are dynamic and responsive to the needs of the communities they serve. Providing mental health resources where they are needed most helps foster healthier, more resilient students and families.”
“The SBHC 101 Toolkit underscores our commitment to reducing barriers to accessing care and improving health and education outcomes for Ohio’s students, their families, and communities,” stated Reem Aly, Executive Director of the Ohio School-Based Health Alliance. “By providing clear, actionable guidance and resources, we are supporting communities in establishing impactful, sustainable SBHC partnerships that ensure Ohio’s children are healthy and ready to learn.”
The Ohio School-Based Health Alliance is the state’s only nonpartisan, statewide organization dedicated to advancing and sustaining school-based health care through capacity building and technical assistance, policy transformation, and data tracking and evaluation.
